The importance of risk management in trading
How to preserve your capital and build stable results in the financial markets through a disciplined risk-management framework.
Risk management is the first barrier between a trader and the gradual ruin of an account. In forex, equities, and crypto markets, reading the market well is not enough unless you define in advance how much you will lose when the analysis is wrong. A professional trader begins every trade with one question: what is the maximum loss I can absorb without breaking my discipline?
Most large losses do not come from a single bad trade, but from unmeasured risk stacking over weeks. When the loss per trade exceeds a reasonable share of capital, recovery becomes psychological as well as mathematical. The result is often size doubling or ignoring stop-losses—behaviors that turn a small mistake into a crisis. A trading strategy should therefore rest on fixed rules: a risk ratio, position size, and a daily loss cap.
